Highlights of the summer 2017 events include the Shanghai Grand Theatre Arts Group Residency with a concert of traditional Chinese music on 22 May and the UK premiere of The Wager, an original contemporary Chinese opera by Wen Dequin on 26 & 27 May. This year’s summer musical is Crazy For You with music and lyrics by George and Ira Gershwin, based on the book by Ken Ludwig, from 4 July. Guildhall musicians will perform in the UK premiere of a new children’s opera with Sir Simon Rattle and the London Symphony Orchestra on 9 July: Andrew Norman’s A Trip to the Moon.
Following the publication of the first draft of the City Bridge Trust’s 2018-2023 Funding Strategy, Alderman Alison Gowman, Chairman of City Bridge Trust Committee, hosted a Members’ Breakfast briefing on 7 March. Applications for the 2017-18 Guildhall Creative Entrepreneurs Scheme are now open. The scheme, which is run by the School and social enterprise Cause4 is a business incubator offering enterprise training, mentoring and funding support to aspiring entrepreneurs in the performing arts and creative industries. Since 2013, the scheme has incubated over 30 creative entrepreneurs with over 90% of entrepreneurs still operational in the creative industries. The Open Day takes place on 3 May and the applications closing date is 6 July.
