On 20 April, 45 COLAI students attended the annual Year 11 revision camp at Marchants Hill in Guilford. Students worked closely with COLAI staff in groups of no more than six focusing on aspects of key subject knowledge and exam technique. When not studying they were able to take part in activities such as climbing, abseiling and trapeze, challenging any self-imposed limitations they might hold. The students returned tired but full of confidence and highly motivated. On 19 April, sixth form students and staff from the Academy were invited to attend the RAF centenary celebration event. They were delighted to attend and particularly enjoyed seeing a selection of war planes. They were also treated to inspirational speeches, including one by the Lord Mayor. The students who attended are studying A Level History and commented on how the event brought the history of the RAF to life. Year 12 student, Matthew McNamara said, ‘I have only ever seen planes like that in films’. Since December 2017, six students from the Year 12 Business & Economics Department have been working with a team of mentors from Deloitte on the Deloitte TMT Challenge. The group were tasked with developing an idea for an augmented reality mobile application that could be used in the retail sector. On 27 February, the group presented their idea – a mobile telephone application which would help elderly people take their prescription drugs – to a judging panel at the Deloitte offices in Holborn. They won this stage of the competition and the final, where they presented in front of around 100 technology entrepreneurs.
