In 2008 the City was the first local authority in the country to be recognised for its record in reducing CO2 emissions by being Carbon Trust Standard accredited.
In the same year it was also identified by Government as a Beacon Council on climate change due to it’s ground breaking work in climate change adaptation as well as it’s energy and mitigation heritage.
The City of London Corporation currently faces an annual energy bill of around £13.5M and we emit around 82,000 tonnes of CO2.
Chief officers, technical staff and departmental 'green' teams throughout the Corporation are playing their part in ensuring that as we go forward we achieve significant reductions in our carbon emissions. Given the complexities of our buildings and the nature of our operations this will be a huge challenge.
Applying the latest technology to automate and control energy is the way forward with shrewd investment, but in the meantime being aware and conscious of waste by turning lights and computers off when not required must continue to be the norm and not the exception. For instance new automatic controls are to be fitted in the Members areas of Guildhall next year, but in the meantime we all should play our part in ensuring lights computers and other equipment is simply turned off when not in use.
Chaired by Alderman Alison Gowman the City's Energy Working Party provides the top level support that is crucial in achieving success in energy management.
