The City of London Corporation is sponsoring the Social Mobility Employer Index, a new initiative from the Social Mobility Foundation and Social Mobility Commission – which ranks Britain’s top businesses on how open they are to accessing, recruiting and progressing talent from all backgrounds. The Index is an important benchmarking tool primarily targeted at sectors which are keen to improve their approach to social mobility. The Index gives firms from across the UK the opportunity to showcase their progress towards improving social mobility. The Policy Chairman has highlighted that “the country’s economic sustainability is vulnerable unless the skills gap is plugged, we must open our doors to the untapped pool of talent on our doorstep”. Members are encouraged to ask their business contacts to sign up to the Free Social Mobility Employer Index. To take part, companies answer a range of questions about their practices and procedures in areas such as recruitment, selection and progression. They will be ranked by a respected panel of experts and receive recommendations for areas for improvement. Firms can enter anonymously and the stand-out performers will be announced in June at a launch hosted by the City Corporation and in a supplement in the The Times newspaper. The deadline for submissions is 3rd May. Further information can be found online.
